Confused about the differences between balayage, foil highlights and ombre?
Balayage is a TECHNIQUE whereby lightener and/or hair color is painted on with a brush without placing the hair in foil packets. We do a lot of blonde balayage along with browns, reds and pretty much every other color you can imagine.
The term “highlights” usually refers to the TECHNIQUE of lightening the hair in foil packets .
The Balayage technique is known for producing softer blends with lots of dimension but a good colorist can achieve similar results using balayage or foil highlighting techniques. Which technique is best for you will depend on the look you’re after. “Foilayage” is another technique that combines both balayage and foiling.
Ombre is a LOOK whereby the hair transitions from one tone or color at the roots to another at the ends (typically dark to light). The Ombre look can be achieved using balayage or foil highlighting techniques.
